Why Choose Evergreen?Because we don't believe in putting kids, or their music education, in a box.
Hi, I'm Niki Weidner, M.Ed., BCCS, the founder, owner, and instructor of Evergreen Music School!
As a child and teenager, I grew up taking from teachers who gave a rigid plan of theory, songs, and exercises to complete throughout my entire journey. I hardly got to choose, I rarely wanted to go to lessons, and the stuff I was learning didn't seem to apply to me. I was learning note reading for the sake of learning note reading, and I grew jealous of the modern day musicians - including my late Nana (an outstanding organist and pianist) - who could rapidly sight read anything, play modern music with just lyrics and chord symbols (lead sheets), create all forms and types of music, call out any music history and culture facts in depth, and improvise on the fly. I was an advanced musician by 7th grade, but my knowledge was limited to only playing what was on the page (very slowly with new songs), replaying the few songs I had already spent weeks learning, and some theory concepts. So I quit because things felt too hard, and I didn't feel like trying anymore. Why didn't I feel like I'd learned anything helpful or special? Because the world of music doesn't fit inside a box...yet so many teachers (even I have in the past) - many with well-meaning intent - do this in their lesson programs without realizing it, by having students do exams, competitions, and/or certain curriculum paths. They believe that classical piano, theory, and ear training are of the utmost importance, and while those are good things, there are lots of pieces missing in the traditional lesson experience - burning kids out faster, creating practice arguments at home with parents, and causing 88% of adults to regret quitting music lessons too soon in life. We believe that kids deserve to see the entire world of music - not just how to play old pieces on the piano, but how to play songs they love, understand why music is important to humans and different parts of history and the world, how to create their own music to express their emotions and imaginations, learn the non-music skills needed to persevere and enjoy working hard on something rewarding to them, and even how music integrates with other art forms. It's our mission at Evergreen to ensure students experience this at every age, level, and to their individual interests and giftings around music. A truly holistic music education.
