GUITAR AT EVERGREEN

Learn More Than a Few Songs.

Learning guitar should be more than memorizing where to put your fingers.

Students develop the skills that allow them to understand and play music for themselves. Depending on their age, experience, interests, and goals, lessons may include technique, chords, scales, reading music, rhythm, ear training, theory, repertoire, improvisation, and music fundamentals.

We want students to understand what they are doing, not simply copy what their teacher shows them.

Over time, that foundation gives students the ability to approach new music with greater independence and confidence.

Guitar Lessons That Adapt to the Student.

No two students come to guitar with exactly the same starting point.

Some students are complete beginners. Others have learned from videos or apps and need help building a stronger foundation. Some want to play their favorite songs, while others become interested in songwriting, theory, improvisation, or more advanced musicianship as they progress.

Lessons can adapt to the student's current abilities and interests while continuing to build the fundamentals they need to keep progressing.

The goal isn't to make every student follow the exact same path. It's to make sure every student is developing the skills to move forward.

Why Learn Guitar at Evergreen?

Evergreen is a small independent music school, which means students aren't simply placed into a standardized lesson system and sent on their way.

Our teachers pay attention to how each student learns, where they are progressing, and where they need more support or challenge. We maintain high expectations while recognizing that students may need different explanations, different approaches, or different amounts of time to get there.

We also believe music education should develop more than technical ability. Students should gradually become better at listening, problem-solving, practicing, and figuring things out for themselves.

Who Are Guitar Lessons For?

Private guitar lessons are a good fit for students who want individualized instruction and are ready to learn the instrument in a structured setting. Guitar students at Evergreen may be:
  • Ages 10 or older
  • Complete beginners with no previous musical experience
  • Students transferring from another teacher or program
  • Students who already play casually and want a stronger foundation
  • Students interested in playing songs and accompanying themselves
  • Students interested in theory, improvisation, or more advanced musicianship
  • Students who want to develop guitar as a long-term musical skill

You don't have to know exactly what your child will want to do with guitar years from now. Their interests can develop as their skills do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need to know how to play guitar already?
No. Beginners are welcome. We start with the fundamentals and build from there.

What age can children start guitar lessons?
Evergreen generally recommends guitar beginning around age 10. Younger students often benefit from starting with piano first, depending on their development and goals.

Does my child need their own guitar?
Students will need access to an appropriate guitar for practice at home and to bring each week to lessons. We'll help you understand what your child needs if you're purchasing an instrument for the first time.

What kind of guitar will my child learn?
That depends on the student's interests and goals. Lessons can incorporate the techniques and repertoire appropriate to the type of guitar and music the student wants to pursue.

Does my child have to practice at home?
Regular practice is an important part of learning an instrument. Students will receive clear guidance about what to work on between lessons, and expectations will develop as the student becomes more experienced and independent.

What if my child doesn't know what kind of music they like yet?
That's completely fine. Students' interests often change as they discover new music and develop new skills. We can build a strong foundation while allowing their musical interests to develop over time.

Can guitar students perform?
Yes. Evergreen offers recital and performance opportunities for students who want to participate. Performance is encouraged as a way to build musical experience, but students do not need to pursue competitive performance.

What if my child has ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or another learning difference?
Evergreen has specialized expertise in adapting music instruction for different kinds of learners. We adjust explanations, pacing, repetition, and teaching approaches when needed without lowering the expectations for what a student can learn.

Can my child eventually pursue advanced guitar study?
Yes. Students who develop more advanced interests can continue building their technique, musicianship, theory, and repertoire as their goals develop.
